Basel District Markets

The district markets help to create meeting places and present the district in an open and friendly way.

The city of Basel is characterised by its numerous districts, all of which have their own character and a (multi-) cultural, urban and industrial mix that together form an exciting as well as harmonious city.

Matthäusmarkt, Matthäusplatz (Kleinbasel)

The Matthäus market is a popular meeting place.

A district market selling local products is held in front of the Matthäuskirche in Kleinbasel every Saturday. 80 percent of the goods on offer are home-grown or cultivated by the vendor. The Matthäusmarkt has become a popular meeting place in the district. In addition to the weekly markets, there are four seasonal markets: Bärlauchmarkt, Chirsimarkt, Kürbismarkt, and Zimtmarkt with an even greater selection of local crafts and design work.

St. Johannsmarkt, Vogesenplatz (Grossbasel)

The St. Johannsmarkt has been held in Vogesenplatz, in the newly refurbished St. Johannsquartier, since November 2010. The produce on offer ranges from fruit and vegetables from the region to local pastries, sausages, cheeses and wine, plus flowers and potted plants. There are also seasonal markets with a wider range to choose from.

A market spectacle at the Tellplatz in the “Gundeli”: The market produce at the Tellplatz is varied and fresh every week – very inviting for shopping and dining. In addition to a Demeter stall with seasonal vegetables, fruits, bread and eggs the market also sells homemade baked goods, a variety of pickles, mustards and jams. There are also flowers, cheeses, milk, organic fertilisers on offer plus the addition of alternating lively activities for the district.

Old Market Hall (next to Basel SBB)

The inviting aromas of fresh bread, cheese, sweet fruits and freshly ground coffee can once again be scented under the large cupola of the Old Market Hall. The attractive domed building has been in use as a market hall once again since October 2013, featuring market stalls well-stocked with fresh products and appetising menus. Comfortable seating, child’s play areas and free WLAN mean that eating, drinking and passing the time here is a unique occasion.

  • Friday and Saturday: 8am to 2am

Tuesday market Rütimeyerplatz

The Tuesday market on the Rütimeyerplatz offers seasonal products from the region.

On the Rütimeyerplatz in the Bachletten district the dienstagsMARKT (Tuesday market) offers the district community the opportunity to buy seasonal fruit, vegetables and agricultural products from the region at an affordable price. At least three quarters of the offered products come from own cultivation or in-house production. As of spring 2017 a coffee mobile stand will be at the dienstagsMARKT on a trial basis. The perfect neighbourhood meeting point for market & coffee lovers.
