Here you will find a chronological list of the most important meetings and activities which have taken place to date within the scope of the twinning initiative between Basel and Shanghai.

15 April 2021
The focal points of the town twinning are determined for three years at a time and recorded in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This document serves as an instrument and orientation framework for the partners involved. The MoU for the years 2021 to 2023 was signed on 15 April 2021 during a video conference between President of the Government Beat Jans and Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng.
21 September 2019: The Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival 2019
The Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival was celebrated for the tenth time on the Kleiner Münsterplatz on Saturday. Approximately 7,000 visitors took advantage of the opportunity to learn about the cultural traditions of the “Middle Kingdom” and enjoy authentic Chinese food. State Councillor Christoph Brutschin cut the traditional moon-cake. One of the highlights of the event was the performance by the classic ensemble of the East China Normal University Shanghai, the partner university of the University of Basel.
14 July 2019: Shanghai Sister Cities Youth Camp 2019
This year two students from the Gymnasium am Münsterplatz attended the Shanghai Sister Cities Youth Camp. This was the first time the two students had ever visited China. The time they spent in the country gave them the opportunity to gain a fascinating insight into the culture, language and traditions of China, not to mention everyday life in this metropolis of 20 million inhabitants. 15 April 2019: Photo exhibition of the University of Basel at the East China Normal University in Shanghai
The staging of the exhibition “Usakos - Photographs Beyond Ruins” in Shanghai resulted from collaboration between the Centre for African Studies in Basel and the East China Normal University. Alongside the exhibition itself, the delegation of the University of Basel used the opportunity to organise several workshops and take part in a round-table discussion. This direct interaction between students and staff of the universities was greatly appreciated.
01 March 2019: Formal meeting within the framework of the Basel–Shanghai partnership
Discussions were held on Friday, 1 March 2019, in Shanghai between the Deputy Mayor of Shanghai, Zong Ming, and State Councillor Lukas Engelberger as part of the partnership between the two cities. The subject on the table was the identification of the main points of the future cooperation of the two cities, with a particular focus on the fields of health and state-of-the-art medicine in addition to education and research. During the course of the visit of the Basel delegation, meetings were also held between the Basel University Hospital and its partner hospitals in Shanghai. BaselArea.swiss and Novatis cooperated in the organisation of a networking event on the subject of digitalisation in healthcare.
21 May 2019: Basel Shanghai High Potentials Programme
The exchange programme for young managers from Shanghai organised by the FHNW School of Business enabled Basel-based companies to meet talented managers from major state-owned companies headquartered in Shanghai. The participants from Shanghai benefited from insights into the best practices of Basel companies. Spring 2019 also saw six young managers from Shanghai gaining business experience with various Basel companies.
29 September 2018: The Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival 2018
About 6,000 people visited Basel’s celebration of the traditional Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival on the Kleiner Münsterplatz. Visitors were able to experience traditional Chinese culture for themselves in the form of a varied entertainment programme, exciting workshops and delicious Chinese food. This year the Basler Marionetten Theater provided something rather special with a performance forming part of its 75th anniversary celebrations.
16 July 2018: Shanghai Sister Cities Youth Camp 2018
Starting in 2012, young people from Basel have had the opportunity of attending the Shanghai Sister Cities Youth Camp. The event is held annually and offers the opportunity to get to know the city of Shanghai and the Chinese way of life over a period of two weeks. The exchange with campers from Shanghai and many other cities from across the world is greatly appreciated. In the summer of 2018, four students from the Münstergymnasium and the Wirtschaftsgymnasium in Basel attended the camp, where there was no shortage of new and exciting experiences for them. Their report on the camp as well as some of the photos they took can be seen on the website of the Gymnasium am Münsterplatz.
7 April 2017: Official meeting in Shanghai on the anniversary of the city partnership
On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the city partnership between Basel and Shanghai, a delegation from Basel headed by President of the Government Elisabeth Ackermann went to visit the Chinese metropolis on 7 April 2017. The delegation’s agenda included, among other activities, a meeting with the mayor of Shanghai, YING Yong, on Saturday 8 April 2017 and an exchange on business and educational matters. The programme was rounded off by a concert performed by the Basel Chamber Orchestra at the Shanghai Oriental Art Centre.
24 October 2016: Junior managers exchange
The continuation of the exchange programme has been confirmed in the new MoU 2017-2019 and ensures that relations between the two partner cities are set on a solid foundation and remain strong.
2 September 2016: Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding 2017-2019
Basel and Chinese metropolis Shanghai have been linked by a sister-city arrangement since 2007. On September 2, 2016, in Basel City Hall, President of the Government of the Canton of Basel-Stadt, Guy Morin, and Deputy Secretary of the CPC Shanghai Committee, Ying Yong, signed an agreement for further cooperation for 2017 to 2019.
Morin explains the importance of signing the agreement: “the partnership has resulted in many projects that have created added value for Basel, as well as for Shanghai, such as collaborations between the University of Basel and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland with partner universities in Shanghai, an exchange program for executives or cooperation in the field of healthcare”.
26 September 2015: Mid-Autumn Festival in Basel
Over 6,000 visitors attended the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival on Kleiner Münsterplatz in Basel today. For the sixth time, Chinese residents of the Basel region presented a diverse cultural programme free of Charge.
"For the Basel population, the Mid-Autumn Festival in Basel brings the partnership between Basel and Shanghai to life", said Sabine Horvath, Head of External Affairs and Marketing at the Department of Presidential Affairs of the Canton of Basel-Stadt.
25 March 2015: The Basel Symphony Orchestra performs at the Shanghai Oriental Art Centre
In the context of its Asian tour, the Basel Symphony Orchestra performs at the Shanghai Oriental Art Centre on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the bilateral relations between Switzerland and China.
24 March 2015: Book launch in Shanghai
The illustrated Chinese-English book "The Late Qing Empire Through the Lens of a Swiss" was presented at a celebratory event in Shanghai on 24 March 2015. The Swiss Consul General in Shanghai, Alexander Hoffet, the Vice-President of the University of Basel, Edwin C. Constable, and the Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Basel, Qi Zhu Ammann, took part in the ceremony to launch the illustrated book. In the work, 91 photos from the private albums of Basel merchant Adolf Krayer, who lived in Shanghai from 1860-1868, are published for the first time. The texts describing the pictures were meticulously researched, with some of them being travel memoirs from Krayer's diaries. The work is the result of collaboration between the partner universities East China Normal University and the University of Basel and confirms the historic link between Shanghai and Basel.
16th October 2014: reception of the Vice-Minister of Health, SUN
A delegation from the National Health and Family Planning Commission from Peking visited the Canton of Basel-Stadt on 16th October 2014. Following an introduction to the local hospitals by Dr. Werner Kübler, Prof. Regine Landmann (University Hospital Basel) and Prof. Thomas Erb (UKBB), the delegation was officially welcomed at the town hall by President of the Government, Dr. Guy Morin (image). The delegation was led by Vice-Minister SUN Zhigang.
September 7, 2014: Basel Mid-Autumn Festival

On 7.9.2014, the small Münsterplatz was once again transformed into a Chinese garden park on the occasion of the Basel Mid-Autumn Festival. The festival gave some 8000 visitors an opportunity to get to know the Chinese culture and formed a space for the Basel populace and the local Chinese residents to meet each other. Most of the cultural performances were offered by semi-professional groups of performers from the Basel area. The Embassy of the People's Republic of China arranged to have a professional group of performers flown in from its partnership town Shanghai, especially for the Basel Mid-Autumn Festival: Moon Fusion music with Chinese instruments.
July 18, 2014: Delegation from the Jing'an District visited Basel
On 18 July 2014, a delegation from the Jing'an District of the partner city of Shanghai visited the Canton of Basel-Stadt. After a reception at the town hall, the delegation toured the Confucius Institute at the University of Basel (photo), where the activities of the China Business Platform were also presented. The delegation was led by Chairman Han Qiang of the CPPCC Shanghai Jing'an District Committee, the Political Consultative Conference of the district of Jing'an. This is one of two selected partner districts with which the canton of Basel-Stadt maintains a special relationship as part of the city partnership with Shanghai.
July 1, 2014: Free trade agreement Switzerland - China
The official festivities to celebrate the coming into effect of the free trade agreement between Switzerland and the People's Republic of China were held on 1 July 2014 at the Basel Rhineport. Christoph Brutschin, Councillor of the Canton of Basel-Stadt, had the honour of welcoming to Basel Yu Jianhua, the People's Republic of China's permanent representative to the World Trade Organization, along with the Swiss Federal Councillor Johann Schneider-Ammann and other high-ranking representatives from politics and business. This was followed by a symbolic exchange of Swiss and Chinese cargo containers and a round trip on the Rhine on the MS Christoph Merian along with 400 invited guests. The Sino-Swiss Economic Forum had taken place before the celebrations. The Forum highlighted the benefits of the free trade agreement from a practical point of view and also from the perspective of Basel and Shanghai as twin cities.
May 19, 2014: Reception of SUN Chunlan at Basel Town Hall
On May 19, 2014, the city of Basel had the honour of officially welcoming SUN Chunlan in their town hall. SUN Chunlan is one of twenty-five members of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, and Party Secretary of the City Committee of Tianjin. Dr. Guy Morin, President of the Government, welcomed the most prestigious Chinese delegation to have ever visited Basel in the government council room. The mutual interests of Switzerland and China were discussed at a joint meeting as well as those of the two cities of Tianjin and Basel. The Ambassador of the People's Republic of China in Berne, XU Jinghu, also took part in the meeting. The interest of the high-level Chinese delegation in Basel has grown owing to the very good relations Basel has maintained with China since its twinning with Shanghai in 2003.
March 21, 2014: Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding 2014-2016
During a delegation visit, President of the Government Dr. Guy Morin and Deputy Secretary of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee LI Xi, the third highest-ranking official in Shanghai, signed the third consecutive Memorandum of Understanding which sets out concrete co-operation betweent he partner cities in the period 2014-2016. The delegation also visited the apprenticeship workshop for mechanics to gain an insight into the Swiss dual education system.
Continuation of the manager exchange between Basel and Shanghai. Between October and November, ten Chinese managers came to Basel in order to gain work experience. In September, eight Swiss mangers travelled to Shanghai in order to experience their own impressions of China. The China Strategies devised by them as part of the CAS International Management course were presented on 29 November 2013 in the antechamber of the Basel Town Hall, where a prize was awarded for the best strategy.

The Basel 2013 Mid-Autumn Festival was celebrated once again to great acclaim and the small Münsterplatz was transformed into a Chinese public garden. The Chinese Ambassador XU Jinghu and the President of the Basel-Stadt Government Dr. Guy Morin welcomed the around 5000 visitors and opened the Mid-Autumn Festival with a traditional mooncake ceremony. The highlight of the evening was the appearance of the group from the East China Normal University, as a contribution by the Chinese Embassy to the Basel Mid-Autumn Festival. Following this, Chinese nationals and those with an interest in China from the region presented a varied stage programme with Chinese music and dancing, which was organised by the China-Basel Association. In conclusion, a Chinese dragon dance led to the Pfalz terrace, where visitors were able to watch the bright full moon.
Novartis and Roche were official partners of the Basel 2013 Mid-Autumn Festival. The event received financial support from the Basel-Stadt Swisslos Fund

14 May, 2013: Basel and Shanghai intensify relationships
In order to deepen and intensify the cities’ partnership with Shanghai, which has existed since 2007, a delegation from Basel under the leadership of the Vice-President of the Government Carlo Conti travelled to the Chinese metropolis on 14 May 2013. The delegation was composed of representatives of the Department of External Affairs and Location Marketing of the Canton of Basel-Stadt, the University of Basel, the University Hospital of Basel, and the University Children's Hospital of the Two Basels (UKBB).
The programme for the four-day visit included discussion of the activities within the framework of the cities’ partnership with Shanghai, deepening the existing collaboration projects in the field of health care, and signing the contracts for establishment of a Confucius Institute at the University of Basel.

September 30, 2012: Basel Mid-Autumn Festival Festival 2012
On Sunday, 30. September 2012, the small Münsterplatz was once again transformed into a Chinese People’s Garden. The Chinese Ambassador Ken WU and the President of the Government of Basel-Stadt, Dr. Guy Morin, welcomed the around 5,000 visitors, and opened the Mid-Autumn Festival with a traditional Moon Cake ceremony. This was followed by a performance by a professional dancing and singing group from the Chinese province of Yunnan. This colourful presentation was a contribution of the Chinese Embassy to the Basel Mid-Autumn Festival. The Chinese Community and people from the Basel region who are interested in China then presented a varied programme of entertainment, with Chinese music, folklore, poetry and dance, which was organised by the China-Basel Association. As the finishing touch, a Chinese dragon dance led the way to the Pfalz, where the visitors were able to see the bright full moon.
The official partner of the Basel Mid-Autumn Festival 2012 was the UBS. The event was financially supported by the Swisslos-Fonds Basel-Stadt.
September 26, 2012: Delegation from the Shanghai Pudong New Area Health Bureau
A six-member delegation from the Shanghai Pudong New Area Health Bureau visited the City of Basel on the 26. September 2012. State Councillor Dr. Carlo Conti received the members of the delegation, who were under the leadership of the Deputy General Director LI Ronghua. Dr. med. MPH Peter Indra, Head of the Department of Public Health, then explained the cornerstones of the health system of the Canton of Basel-Stadt to the interested guests.
August 27 to October 5 2012: Exhibition on the main hall of the UBS
In the autumn of 2012, the Canton of Basel-Stadt celebrated the fifth anniversary of the City partnership with the Chinese metropolis of Shanghai, from which numerous cooperations have arisen in the fields of education and science, medical excellence, culture, business and sustainability. From the 27. August up to the 5. October 2012, an exhibition in the main hall of the UBS building at Bankverein provided information about the content and achievements of the city partnership between Basel and Shanghai, which has been in existence since 2007.
On the 27. August, the President of the Government Dr. Guy Morin opened the exhibition in the presence of around 100 invited guests. A further event took place in the exhibition rooms on the 3. September with a business event under the direction of State Councillor Christoph Brutschin. In addition, the China Community has been offering an intercultural programme with various activities, such as calligraphy, Chinese language courses, making lanterns and much more, every Wednesday afternoon.
July 12, 2012: Swiss Rhine ports receive delegation from Shanghai
Six representatives of the Shanghai Municipal Port and Transport Authority visited Basel on Thursday, 12 July 2012. The purpose of the visit was for the authorities of the partner cities to exchange experiences. During a boat tour of the Swiss Rhine port area, port director Hans-Peter Hadorn informed the delegation about the infrastructure projects at Switzerland’s only port and the collaboration with the port of Rotterdam. Alain Groff, Director of the Office of Mobility, also presented the plans for the 2020 tram network.
June 27, 2012: Chinese deputy health minister visits the University Hospital of Basel
A Chinese delegation under the leadership of Deputy Health Minister MA Xiaowei paid an official visit to the University Hospital of Basel on Wednesday, 27 June 2012. The main points of interest for the high-ranking Chinese guest were the management system of the University Hospital of Basel and aspects of the working conditions of Swiss health care personnel. The Chinese delegation was greeted by Basel’s State Councillor, Dr. Carlo Conti, the President of the Board of Directors of the University Hospital of Basel, Michael Plüss, and by chief physicians of the University Hospital of Basel.
June 26, 2012: Canton of Basel-Stadt launches China Business Platform
With its China Business Platform, the canton of Basel-Stadt intends to facilitate and intensify economic exchange between the Basel region and China. The pilot project is initially designed to extend over a period of four years. Collaboration with further regional partners is planned and desirable.
The China Business Platform (CBP) is an initiative of the canton of Basel-Stadt within the framework of the Basel-Shanghai city partnership and pursues the objective of facilitating and intensifying economic exchange with China. The platform will be established on a stage-by-stage basis from the autumn of 2012. Organisations already endeavouring to establish economic exchange with China will be integrated in the concept, and new services will be set up in addition to existing ones. The Government Council has approved a budget of a maximum of one million francs for the pilot phase between 2012 and 2015, which will be generated by Basel’s economic development fund. Collaboration with further regional partners predominantly focusing on North-Western Switzerland, especially the canton of Jura, is planned. In addition, it is hoped to partially fund the project through the Federation.
December 8, 2011: SEMC visits Basel
On Thursday, 8 December a reception was held in Basel’s City Hall for a delegation of the Shanghai Economic Management College (SEMC), headed by College Director WANG Guoping. Together with the University of Applied Sciences of Northwestern Switzerland FHNW, the SEMC organises the exchange of junior managers between Shanghai and Basel. The purpose of the visit is to discuss and plan the future of this successful cooperation project.
October 28, 2011: Shanghai Government Delegation
A delegation of the Standing Committee Shanghai Municipal People's Congress (SCSMPC) was welcomed by the President of the Basel’s Great Council, Markus Lehmann, and was introduced to the Canton’s political system.
October 3, 2011: Manager exchange programme to continue
The exchange programme for young managers between Basel and Shanghai launched in 2009 has proven successful, and is to continue under the auspices of the Department of External Affairs and Marketing Basel-Stadt with the added involvement of the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland FHNW. Eight young managers from Shanghai were able to gather useful.
October, 2011: Three Basel delegations in Shanghai
In October 2011 three Basel delegations in the fields of urban planning, education and economics travelled to Shanghai for an exchange of expertise. The three separate visiting delegations were headed by the Executive Council members Hans-Peter Wessels and Christoph Brutschin as well as the Head of Education, Hans Georg Signer. In addition to the exchange of know-how, the programme also included receptions with senior Shanghai government representatives.
September 12, 2011: Premiere for Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival on Münsterplatz
On Monday, September 12, 2011 the Basel Münsterplatz was transformed into a Chinese people’s garden for the first time. Visitors encountered presentations of Chinese music and dance, along with numerous opportunities for children and adults to take part. The festival was realised in collaboration between the Department of Presidential Affairs of Basel-Stadt and the Museum of Cultures, while the programme was finalised by a working group which included with representatives of the Chinese community.

May 30, 2011: Deepened cooperations
A Basel health delegation headed by the Vice-President of the Executive Council Carlo Conti travelled to Shanghai on 30 May 2011 for a three-day exchange of expertise. Talks centred on the cooperation between the Basel Area University Children’s Hospital (UKBB) and the Shanghai Children Medical Center (SCMC), which was launched at the beginning of 2011. A meeting was held with Deputy Mayor SHEN Xiaoming to discuss the further development and intensification of this cooperation.
May 9, 2011: Education Delegation
An Education Delegation from Shanghai has met Mr. H. G. Signer, Head of Education at the Department of Education of Basel-Stadt, and other education representatives from Basel, and has discussed the possibilities for joint cooperation. The participants of the meeting exchanged views about similarities and development trends in the educational systems of the two cities. As a conclusion, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed, which will form the basis for future cooperation.
April 15, 2011: Delegation
The Government of the Canton of Basel-Stadt received a delegation led by YU Zhengsheng, the Party Secretary of Shanghai. Projects and subjects in connection with the City Partnership were discussed during the reception in the City Hall. After the meetings, there was an official dinner with further high-ranking guests in the Villa Wenkenhof in Riehen.
March 15, 2011: Visit of the Luwan Delegation
On Shrove Tuesday, Basel was visited by a delegation from the Shanghai Luwan district. In addition to an exchange of information about the organisation of major events such as the Carnival (Fasnacht), the delegation also enjoyed a guided tour through the bustle of the Basel Carnival and the carnival lantern exhibition.
February 22, 2011: Partner Schools
Basel's Gymnasium Leonhard and the renowned 'High School Affiliated to Fudan University' from Shanghai are now partner schools and organise a student exchange program. The headmasters of both schools, Roger Morger und ZHENG Fang Xian, signed a partnership agreement in Basel.
January 13 – 14, 2011: Health Delegation
A health delegation from Shanghai visited Basel for the inauguration of the new University Children's Hospital of both Basel. The delegation visited the new hospital building and met with the management board and Vice President of the Executive Council Dr. Carlo Conti. On this occasion, the Shanghai Children’s Medical Center and the University Children's Hospital of both Basel also signed a Memorandum of Understanding for further projects and cooperations.
November 29 - December 2, 2010: Urban Planning Delegation
State Councillor Hans-Peter Wessels welcomed a delegation from Shanghai's Urban Planning and Land Resource Administration Bureau. During the three-day visit in Basel, the delegation discussed city planning as well as architecture and visited the rhine port and Basel's beautiful old town.
November 17, 2010: Concert of the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra
The concert of the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra in Basel was the perfect event to celebrate the three-year existence of Basel and Shanghai's successful partnership. The guests enjoyed an exceptional performance of the orchestra and were informed about the City Partnership by the President of the Executive Council Dr. Guy Morin.

October 31, 2010: End of the 2010 World Expo Shanghai
Together with the gates of the World Expo, the joint pavilion of the three Swiss cities of Basel, Geneva, and Zurich is closing its doors after six extremely successful months and more than two million visitors.
September 22, 2010: Moon festival
For the first time, representatives of the Chinese community were invited to Basel’s city hall to celebrate the traditional Chinese moon festival. Vice-President of the Government Dr. Carlo Conti welcomed the guests, and WU Ken, China’s new ambassador to Switzerland, gave an address.

September 22, 2010: Inaugural visit of the new Chinese ambassador
WU Ken, the new ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Switzerland, is welcomed by the President of the Government Dr. Guy Morin, the Vice-President of the Government Dr Carlo Conti, and State Councillor Dr. Hans-Peter Wessels on the occasion of an inaugural visit.
September 9, 2010: Delegation
The committee of the Shanghai Municipal People's Congress (SCSMPC) under the leadership of Mr. SHI Kai, the director of the research office, was received in the city hall by the President of the Parliament Annemarie von Bidder. Together with other members of the Executive Council, the guests are informed about the functioning and the special characteristics of the Executive Council.
August 11, 2010: Signing of the MoU
State Councillor Hans-Peter Wessels and Shanghai’s deputy mayor SHEN Jun sign the Memorandum of Understanding for the years 2011 to 2013 in Shanghai in the presence of the President of the Parliament Annemarie von Bidder.
August 8 – 11, 2010: Basel-Shanghai days at the World Expo
The highlight of the Basel-Shanghai days is the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Shanghai and Basel. The focus of the days is otherwise very much on culture; as well as specialist events on architecture, spatial planning and design, a performance by the Basel Symphony Orchestra takes place. May 20 – 28, 2010: Basel Week at the World Expo
Basel presents itself in all its diversity during «Basel Week». Special themed days in the joint cities pavilion create a suitable backdrop for deepening the twinning initiative between Basel and Shanghai which has been in existence since 2007. Numerous Basel representatives and organizations use the unique opportunity to maintain existing projects with Shanghai and to launch new ones. On May 26, Basel’s President of the Government Dr. Guy Morin, the Vice-President of the Government Dr. Carlo Conti and Shanghai’s major Zheng HAN therefore met to discuss their joint interests.

February 3, 2010: Delegation
The President of the Government Dr. Guy Morin welcomes a delegation from the Chinese Ministry of Culture under the leadership of Mr. XIANG Xiaowei, the Vice Director of the Department for Cultural Exchange. April 30, 2009: Dedication of the basilisk fountain in Shanghai
Vice-President of the Government Dr. Carlo Conti dedicates Basel’s landmark in the Chinese partner city in the presence of local representatives, local media, representatives of the Swiss authorities, of associations and companies, natives of Basel living abroad, and many onlookers. As the result of the drinking water fountain, Basel is now also physically present in the partner city.
November 2008: Switzerland’s show at the World Expo is defined
The cities of Basel, Geneva and Zurich present their common show at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai. A contract is signed in Shanghai to seal the participation of the three Swiss cities.
October 28, 2008: The Chinese Ambassador visits Basel
Ambassador DONG Jinyi, who has been the official diplomatic representative of the People’s Republic of China in Switzerland since April 2008, and his wife are formally received by President of the Government Dr. Guy Morin, Vice-President of the Government Dr. Carlo Conti and State Councillor Dr. Ralph Lewin.
September 26, 2008: Visitors from Shanghai in Basel
A delegation of seven representatives from Shanghai, led by LI Liangyuan, Vice Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Shanghai Committee, is received at the Rathaus by Vice-President of the Government Dr. Carlo Conti. The delegation comes to discuss the governmental systems of the two city states.
September 25-28, 2008: Art project «Echoing Shanghai» in Basel
«Echoing Shanghai», a project by artist and curator Art Clay, presents a playful exchange of art and high tech. The project is supported by ETH Zurich, Swissnex Shanghai and Location Marketing Basel, among others.
May 16-23, 2008: Art project «Echoing Shanghai» in Shanghai
During the Digital Arts Weeks in Shanghai, the official city partnership Basel-Shanghai presented the sound sculpture «Echoing Shanghai». The exhibition is accompanied by a panel discussion, concerts and an official ceremony.
May 9-12, 2008: First direct flight Zurich-Shanghai
State Councillor Dr. Ralph Lewin is a passenger on the first direct flight Zurich-Shanghai of Swiss International Airlines. In Shanghai, Lewin speaks at a press conference and meets with representatives of Shanghai municipality, World Expo Shanghai 2010 and the Swiss authorities.
April 4, 2008: Memorandum of Understanding 2008-2010 is signed
During a visit to Basel, SHEN Hongguang, Member of the Standing Committee and Head of Organization Department, CPC Shanghai Committee and head of the visiting delegation, and President of the Government Dr. Guy Morin sign a Memorandum of Understanding that defines the areas of cooperation between 2008 and 2010. The delegation also visits Novartis and the Baselworld fair of jewellery.

Several representatives of Medical College of the Fudan University in Shanghai participate in a public symposion organized by the University Hospital Basel.
January 8, 2008: Economic delegation from Shanghai visits Basel
A delegation from the Xhuhui district in Shanghai, led by MAO Minggui, President Xuhui District International Chamber of Commerce, visits Basel. The Chinese guests are welcomed by President of the Government Dr. Dr. Eva Herzog and the State Councillors Dr. Carlo Conti and Dr. Ralph Lewin. They also visit several companies in Basel.
November 19, 2007: A contract is signed – Basel and Shanghai are officially partners
State Councillor Dr. Carlo Conti and Vice Mayor TANG Dengjie sign the contract that formally seals the city partnership between Basel and Shanghai. The ceremony takes place in Shanghai. As a symbolic gift, Conti gives the Vice Mayor the model of a basilisk fountain, a traditional drinking fountain in Basel. Later, the original fountain will be installed in a Shanghai park.
December 2-3, 2006: Basel visits the ITI Asia Congress in Shanghai
At the ITI Asia Congress in Shanghai, co-hosted and organised by Straumann AG in Basel, State Councillor Dr. Carlo Conti and Vice Mayor TANG Dengjie express the will to enter an official city partnership.
