Offene Kirche Elisabethen

Offene Kirche Elisabethen is the most important Neo-Gothic church in Switzerland. With its imposing historical interior, it offers an unconventional setting for a wide variety of events. Located right at the centre of Basel, Offene Kirche Elisabethen is directly adjacent to Basel Theatre.

Photo: Oliver Hochstrasser / Offene Kirche Elisabethen

Offene Kirche Elisabethen was erected between 1857 and 1865, and was the first entirely new Protestant church to be built in Basel after the Reformation. The Neo-Gothic Offene Kirche Elisabethen is a vaulted hall church with three naves, galleries, front tower (east) and polygonal choir (west). During the course of its planning and execution, countless modifications were made, above all to the interior. The grey sandstone exterior of the church was renovated between 1895 and 1899. The gargoyles on the roof, the gable relief above the main entrance, the pulpit and the other sculptured parts of the building were designed by Jacques-Ange Corbel (Paris). The stone pulpit forms the focal point of the church.

The church is centrally located, and can be reached easily by tram or railway (2 tram stops from the central railway station, Bahnhof SBB). It is run by the ecumenical Association Offene Kirche Elisabethen (Open Elisabethen Church Association) as a place of social, cultural and spiritual-religious diversity, as a platform for new and experimental forms of expression, as a forum for interaction, debate and discussion. In addition, the church Association organises its own events and can be hired by outside parties to stage a wide range of further events. It provides an experimental setting for contemporary, temporal and humanistic forms of spiritually, and presents Basel's innovative and rich art and cultural scene with a new theatre of action. Artists drawn from a wide range of disciplines use Elisabethenkirche to present their artistic endeavours and work (exhibitions, spatial-specific installations, theatre, dance, performances, events, concerts, readings, podium discussions, etc.).

The Association also hires the church out for commercial events such as inter alia soirees, anniversaries, corporate events, concerts, wedding celebrations, banquets, exhibitions, discos and birthday parties. With a floor area of 530 m2, Elisabethenkirche offers space for about 1'200 standing guests, or seating for 850 when concerts are given. Alternatively, banquets for up to 150 seated guests can be accommodated. The church is equipped with a permanent loudspeaker system. In addition, stage sections, a projection screen, slide and overhead projectors are available to event organisers. Special technical support and equipment can also be organised upon request. The Elisabethenkirche team will be pleased to help you plan and hold your event, ensuring that this is turned into a success in the special ambience of the church.

Kleines Klingental

The historical building «Kleines Klingental» (small Klingental), built in 1274, is situated right on the Basel Rhine promenade and offers an ideal setting for events in a personal and impressive atmosphere. Basels many cultural treasures can be reached within a short walk.

Photo: Refektorium im Museum Kleines Klingental

The Kleine Klingental was constructed in 1274 as a Dominican nunnery and named after its founder Walter von Klingen. Since 1939, the Basel Monument Preservation Office (Basler Denkmalpflege) and the collection of cathedral sculptures are located here. Much of the ground floor is occupied by the refectory (former dining room). Equipped with a late Gothic, double-vaulted slat ceiling (from around 1490), the room is divided into two "ships" by two prominent wooden pillars. A richly profiled doorway connects the refectory with the monastery kitchen. Smoke-blackened ceiling beams and the mighty chimney funnel remind us of the former purpose of the room. The small refectory is located on the first floor on the Rhine side. The room is panelled and endowed with profiled beams (1508).

The entire house, which is under monumental protection, is open to the public and can be rented out for private events. The historic rooms can be furnished within a short time for various purposes and can accommodate 250 people for a standing aperitif, 180 people for concert seating and 160 people for banquet seating. With their different sizes and ambiences, the rooms are suitable for meetings and conferences as well as banquets and festive occasions. The historical atmosphere in the immediate proximity to Basel's Rhine promenade is one-of-a-kind and renders every event a unique experience. A competent and highly experienced team fulfils the wishes of the organisers and is readily available with advice and support right from the preparation phase.

Merian Gärten

The spacious and colourful grounds of Merian Park Botanical Gardens in Brüglingen are an oasis of peace, relaxation and recreation. Located just a short distance from the city centre, the park with its numerous historical buildings is an excellent location for a wide variety of events.

Photo: Merian Gärten

A stroll though the wonderful botanical collections, fascinating biotopes and carefully-tended grounds of the park is sufficient to banish the stress of everyday life, step by lawn-cushioned step; a sense of calm soon prevails. You can also enjoy precisely this atmosphere at social, business or cultural events. What marks out the numerous unusual buildings within this historical setting is not just their stylish atmosphere, but also the infrastructure that turns every event into a special experience. Irrespective of which building is chosen by event organisers, at Merian Park hosts can be sure of selecting a location with a unique appeal. A location which helps make every event a memorable success. Merian Park can be reached with ease by public transport. Outstanding cuisine is also available: an exquisite restaurant is located in the gardens' historic Villa Merian, the one-time summer seat of the founder, Christoph Merian.

The two-storey farm building, the «museum barn», is an imposing structure. The spacious, high-ceilinged Holzsaal (Wooden Hall) is located on the upper storey of this building, which was built in 1905. The historical hall, richly decorated with tub plants, exudes a very special atmosphere and forms an exceptional and impressive setting for parties, concerts or even corporate events (up to 300 persons).

The great profusion of plants in the two capacious greenhouses creates a unique atmosphere. The translucence of the greenhouses creates a particularly intensive proximity to the natural world, while the technical equipment ensures the required security. From June to October these can be hired out for parties, concerts or even exhibitions (up to 100 persons).

The Orangery, which was built around 1850 in the Neo-Renaissance style, and which is an excellent vantage point from which to admire the approx. 450 plant species in the pharmacological garden, is without doubt the gem amongst the buildings at Merian Park. Stylish rooms with round arches and friezes with rosettes adorn the elevated central section, which is flanked by two lower side wings. While the Orangery was used originally to house Mediterranean plants during the winter months, today it hosts more sophisticated activities: it is now an elegant setting for smart parties and festivities, exhibitions, concerts and lectures (up to 100 persons).

The atmosphere in this farm building, which was built in 1837, is thoroughly bucolic. Originally used as horse stables, today the space can be used to host wonderful parties or to hold lectures in a relaxed setting (up to 60 persons).

The tenant building was built in 1839 in Florentine Renaissance style. During the comprehensive renovation which was completed in 1997, a conference room was created on the top floor. This is ideal for lectures, courses, seminars and project work. The conference room, with its venerable wooden beams and natural charm, is likely to make almost any work easier (up to 100 persons).

Saffron Guild Hall

The Saffron Guild Hall is the place where the classic Balois' qualities of maximum flexibility, modern technology, and superb food combine to make it the ideal place for every type of event.

Photo: Safran Zunft

The first historical mention of the Saffron Guild, one of the four Honourable Companies of Basels total of twenty guilds, dates back to 1345. At that time, the place where Basels spice merchants met for a drink was on the Andreasplatz (St Andrews Square). Nearly a hundred years later, in 1423, the Honorable Company of the Saffron Guild bought the present site on Gerbergasse and built its guild hall there. In 1899, this had to give way to a new building, which was always intended to give a new, powerful expression to the historical character of an old guild hall. Only three years later, in 1902, the newly built guild hall was completed and officially dedicated. This building, with its rich tradition, still stands at the heart of Basel and possesses, as befits a Basel guild, a range of historical guild chambers.

The guild room itself, with two great murals that show scenes from the Saffron War fought in 1374, occupies the second floor. Its windows bear the arms of Basel's guilds and Honourable Companies. This grand room maintains Balois tradition. It can seat about 300 and, with every imaginable variation of seating layout, is available throughout the year for all kinds of banquets and other special events. Technical aids are readily available for hire. On the first floor is the so-called Vorgesetztenstube (Masters' Chamber), with oak panelling that came from the old 1750 guild hall. And when an oak-panelled partition is folded back, this venerable chamber, with room for about twenty seats, can be opened to the adjacent Andreas-Ryff-Stube, with space for a further forty seats or so.

The so-called Gilgenstube (Lily Chamber) is named for the guilds ancient heraldic symbol. This light, airy room comfortably holds sixty people at round tables. But this guild hall not only houses rooms that are typical of Basel, there is also its gastronomy which offers a wide choice of food, typical Swiss dishes, and a large number of traditional Balois specialties.

St Chrischona

Because of its geographical position and conference halls, seminar rooms, and smaller public rooms for meetings and groups, all with state-of-art conference and seminar equipment, and simple but comfortably furnished bedrooms, St Chrischona is a place where, remote from a hectic life and stress, body and soul can regain tranquillity.

Photo: St. Chrischona

In 1840, Christian Friedrich Spittler established the St Chrischona Pilgrims Mission in the former pilgrims church of St Chrischona. Just 28 years later, the pilgrims mission acquired its true character when it was revamped into the first school for evangelists of the entire German-speaking region. Then, at the beginning of the 20th century, it became the headquarters of the Deaconesses, a Protestant sisterhood, and Chrischona Communities began to arise all over Europe. St Chrischona is an idyllic spot, 522 metres above sea level and above the municipality of Bettingen near Basel; it is also known as Basel's Alp.

Although the St Chrischona Centre is not immediately next to the city, it is well served by the city's public transport system, the most comfortable way of getting there quickly. The centre, opened in 1992, has three conference rooms, with a capacity of 120 when equipped with conference seating, and 114 with seminar seating. In addition, there are two auditoria, each for 90 people, and three large halls, the smallest of which can accommodate 500 people and the biggest 2000.

The centre's infrastructure is impressively state-of-art. The standard equipment in all the public rooms includes a flipchart, overhead projector, screen, whiteboard, and pin-wall, suitable for presentations and intensive group work. There is also a multifunctional demonstration room with a wide screen and seating for 120. Nor has competent catering been forgotten: everything can be provided, from an informal aperitif and snack to a first-class dinner. Organizers can depend on the excellent in-house gastronomic service with the motto that nothing is impossible.

Eishalle St. Jakob-Arena

Located on the south-eastern perimeter of the city, the St. Jakob Arena Ice Stadium, which was completed in 2002, is part of a high-quality venue for sports and leisure events (the third-largest overall complex in Europe). Its state-of-the-art infrastructure and excellent transport links make the multifunctional Arena a superb venue for major events with well over 6,000 spectators.

Photo: St. Jakob-Arena

Following the completion of the new St. Jakob Arena and the multifunctional stadium St. Jakob-Park, Basel's St. Jakob quarter now boasts one of the most important sport and leisure complexes in Europe: St. Jakobshalle, the light athletics stadium, sport grounds, open air swimming pool and equestrian facilities. The St. Jakob Arena Ice Stadium is an integral part of this sports complex. Excellent public transport links are provided by tram and bus services, as well as a (temporary) railway station. The available parking spaces mean that private road users are also effectively integrated into the transport infrastructure.

The impressive concentration of high-standard sporting, leisure and event facilities is unique both nationally as well as internationally. The excellent geographic location and transport links give the site clear advantages over alternative sporting complexes in Switzerland and abroad.

With the St. Jakob Arena, the Basel region has a multifunctional ice arena that can be used throughout the year, capable of accommodating well over 6'000 spectators, and which makes it possible to host regional, national and international events. The Arena is designed primarily to be used for ice sport purposes. This includes ice hockey, figure skating, ice dancing, synchronised skating, short track as well as free skating. The artificial ice in the Ice Arena is also available for public ice skating, for training and for leisure sport activities.

The surface of the ice can also be covered over, enabling the new Arena to host other sports disciplines; for example for major national or international events and/or in conjunction with the St. Jakobshalle. In addition, the new Ice Arena is also suitable for non-sporting events, such as concerts, ice revues, ice discos, shareholder's meetings or cultural events.

The Ice Arena itself is located on the ground floor of the building, together with a restaurant, the service and public areas. The cloakrooms and infrastructure rooms are located in the basement, together with all the areas available for letting to third parties. The mezzanine level of the state-of-the-art complex holds the spectator banks, the VIP lounge, the technical equipment and the Arena supervisors.

Unternehmen Mitte

Between Marktplatz and Barfüsserplatz, opposite the main post office in the best spot for pedestrian traffic, the old property is today home to «unternehmen mitte».
The former bank building was rebuilt, occupied and partially sublet by a group of entrepreneurial people. The entire building has become a popular gastronomic and cultural centre.

Photo: unternehmen mitte

The two bars «fumare non fumare», which elegantly resolve the problem of smoking in public places, adjoin the main entrance which leads to the spacious coffee hall.

The counters of what used to be Schweizerische Volksbank have disappeared. Today, top quality Italian coffee products and other specialities are served here.

During the day, the large, pillared hall is a modern coffee house. A chill-out zone and working area with wireless LAN, an elegant lounge and a popular meeting point for public events. On some evenings, the hall becomes a music and dance venue, a place for public debates or a stage without a curtain.

In addition to the coffee house, the «Cantina Primo Piano» on the 1st floor welcomes guests to dine at lunchtimes.

A theatre has been established in the former strong-rooms. In the «Kuratorium», an 80 m2 room on one floor with large window frontage opening onto Rümelinsplatz, exhibitions are held as well as dance, theatre and performance projects that generate a good deal of publicity.

The Langer Saal on the 4th floor offers space for a variety of contemplative work. And on the 1st and 3rd floors, individual work stations are being rented out in two large office lab zones. Those working there come from the fields of IT, architecture, the media, advertising/PR, journalism, travel and cultural management.

The former bank building with its diverse premises also offers space for private individuals and companies in which to hold events and activities.

Though this facility was laid out centuries ago, great care has always been taken to ensure that it would not fall behind progress or the technology of the time. This has created a foundation, carefully maintained, in an idyllic setting, that lends itself perfectly to any type of event.

Although this green-belt area is in the municipality of Riehen and still belongs to the half-canton of Basel-Stadt, it is a short distance from the city itself, but easy to reach by frequent public transport. In fact, a bus line stops directly at the parks gates.

In the beautiful park and its landscaped gardens stands the Reithalle, an indoor riding arena built by Alexander Clavel in 1925. This was transformed a few years ago into a stately auditorium whose comfortable furniture and furnishings, unique atmosphere, and flexible seating can accommodate from 350 to 400 people, depending on seating layout. The Reithalle is particularly suitable for banquets, concerts, congresses, seminars, meetings of all kinds, and every conceivable kind of exhibition, bazaar, festive occasion, and cultural event. Its unique location, the stylish ambience, and the personal service offer ideal conditions.

Parterre One

Parterre One Music builds on more than thirty years of event history in the concert and small theatre sector. Since its beginnings in the 80s, under the name "Kaffi Schlappe", the concert hall had been continuously developed until it was completely renovated in 2016 and then reopened on 11 November 2016.

A restaurant, bar and concert hall are arranged around the central courtyard and offer a meeting point for the Basel music scene in the listed building.

The concerts are wide-ranging, from singer-songwriters to electro, world, indie, folk, pop, jazz and classical music. Readings and comedy also form part of the programme. We're committed to offering the local music scene a platform and to enriching the Kulturplatz Triregio in Basel with renowned musicians from all over the world. Since the reopening, a large number of parties in the reggae, electro, old school and hip-hop scenes have filled our calendar of events.

The concert hall can also be used as a multifunctional space for eating and drinking, or for private events.

Atlantis

For generations, the -tis was the most famous music venue in Switzerland. It all started with the Seiler family. The eccentric brothers Kurt and Paul Seiler laid the foundation stone for a more than turbulent story concerning money, women and a lot of alcohol – a story that has not changed over decades. In addition, the souvenirs from Africa, which Kurt Seiler collected on the continent, are legendary; in particular the 4 crocodiles which he brought back from his extensive travels. They lived next to snakes and tarantulas in terrariums in the hazy smoke of the restaurant. Even today Hector watches over the bar in Atlantis from his pride of place.

Crazy stories revolve around Atlantis. It is a history peppered with stars from the worldwide and local music scene, such as  Black Sabbath raising the roof of the -tis some years after the pianists Joe Turner and Don Gais. In -tis the Lazy Poker Blues Band from Basel was a kind of house band. But Rumpelstilz and Les Sauterelles performed here too. The Klosterberg was also used for a time to host theatre performances. Television darling Heidi Abel moderated her live shows here, which spread the radiance of the restaurant far into the country. The rumour that has been circulating for over 50 years is also well known: A Hamburg events organizer had offered The Beatles for a one-week guest performance. But in -tis they decided against this "unknown band from Liverpool" and instead resorted to a well-established German entertainment orchestra. At its present location of Klosterberg 13 since 1947, the -tis with its wild and not always coherent concept was the living room for several Basel generations.

Volkshaus Basel

The traditional restaurant has been basking in fresh glory since the beginning of March 2012. The French brasserie, which was renovated by Herzog & de Meuron, the classic bar, the tree-covered beer garden in the inner courtyard, the boulevard café and the banquet halls together serve as a new culinary and cultural meeting point in the heart of Kleinbasel.

The brasserie in the Volkshaus Basel combines classic elements with special design accents. A blend of tradition and modernity also distinguishes the wide and high-quality range of dishes. From a small aperitif to a wedding or company dinner with several courses – everything is possible here.

The Volkshaus Basel has three halls and associated foyers, which can meet all banquet requirements due to their different sizes. Private or company events from 50 to 1,300 guests are possible at the new Volkshaus. Don Bosco Cultural Centre

The Don Bosco Church is a former Roman Catholic church in the Swiss city of Basel. It is located in the Breite district and was dedicated to Saint Don Bosco. Hermann Baur was the architect of the church, which was built in 1935 under Reverend Robert Mäder.

The Don Bosco Cultural Centre Association is converting the former Don Bosco Church in Basel's Breitequartier into a rehearsal and concert hall with two rehearsal rooms and a concert/rehearsal hall. The new Don Bosco Music and Cultural Centre Basel will be home to the Basel Sinfonietta, the Kammerorchester Basel, the Mädchenkantorei Basel, ensembles from the Music Academy and other cultural institutions in the city.
